Hawai'i seeking to prevent corporations from buying elections [Link]

Sixteen years ago, a United States Supreme Court ruling called Citizens United reversed the long-established restrictions on political spending by corporations. Since then, massive corporations—some with annual revenues exceeding the GDP of entire countries—have been allowed to use their money to influence American politics, vastly out-spending the small donations real American citizens are able to contribute to their preferred political candidates or movements.

Hawai'i may become the first state to put a stop to this anti-democratic practice by invoking a law from their state constitution that allows the state to regulate whether corporate entities can spend money in Hawai'i's politics. This would not impede on the rights of corporate entities in any way, it is simply limiting the powers of those entities. The distinction is very important. The state cannot tell corporations how to spend their money, but it can prohibit all corporations from spending money on politics within the state. Each state can regulate what powers corporations have in their state, and corporations that do not agree are not permitted to operate within the state. Corporations only exist in the state in which they are created, and are granted permission to operate in other states in accordance with the laws of those states they wish to operate in.

Montana is considering similar legislation based on a similar provision of its own charter. These states are seeking this path to eliminate Citizens United because the right-wing extremists in the Supreme Court would challenge any other attempts to undermine Citizens United. But by leaning on state law and the inherent rights of states to regulate business conducted in their own borders, political spending by corporations can be reigned in state-by-state instead of once for the entire nation.

Federal court rules Trump's new tariffs illegal [Link]

Trump's tariff chart from 2025

Last year, Donny 2-Dolls invoked sweeping tariffs on almost every country in the world. On February 28, the Supreme Court ruled most of those tariffs illegal. The tariffs were revoked, and the money that American importers have already spent paying those tariffs is being reimbursed.

Never one to let a little thing like the law stand in his way, Trump simply created new tariffs to replace the ones struck down by the Supreme Court. This week, a federal court ruled that these new tariffs are also illegal. Donny doesn't get it, but the president simply does not have the authority to impose these types of sweeping tariffs. That's a power granted to Congress, not the president.

The federal court ruling is not the final word. Trump will likely appeal, and the case will be taken to the U.S. Court of Appeals and then likely on to the Supreme Court. So it will be a long time before we see a final ruling on the issue.

Trump to spend $7.5 of taxpayer money to paint a building that does not need paint [Link]

Donny 2-Dolls wants to spend $7.5 million of taxpayers money to paint the Eisenhower building. Since no one seems to be talking about the fact that spending that kind of money to paint a single building—any building— is absolutely insane, we'll go ahead and ignore that staggering price tag for now.

What's more important here is the fact that the Eisenhower building is a granite building. Granite is not meant to be painted. In fact, painting over granite can trap moisture between the stone and paint and lead to rapid deterioration of the stone that would not happen if it was left alone. In addition, slapping paint over the beautiful natural granite face of the building, which has been a historic landmark standing next to the White House since it opened in 1888, will destroy the historic character of the building.

Trump has also spent millions of dollars painting the reflecting pool near the Lincoln Memorial to look like a Florida swimming pool. This is what Donny 2-Dolls does with his time and your money while the national debt spirals out of control, we are actively engaged in a totally unnecessary war in Iran, Cubans are dying because the U.S. is preventing oil from being brought into the country, civilian watercraft are constantly being bombed by the U.S. military in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific ocean on the vague claim that they may be transporting drugs, legal immigrants to the United States are being rounded up and deported to countries they have never been to before, and prices for basic necessities are skyrocketing for all Americans. It's not surprising that someone recently spray-painted a massive "8647" message on the reflecting pool surface while it's being repainted.

Iran war has cost the U.S. military billions in equipment losses alone [Link]

$500 million-$1 billion AN/TPY-2 Radar from THAAD system destroyed.

While the Trump regime has been claiming victory over Iran since they started the war in February, the truth tells a very different tale.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies estimates that the United States has lost at least $2.3-$2.8 billion worth of equipment alone. This estimate does not include losses incurred from damage to US bases in the Middle East, specialized equipment, or naval assets.

The Trump regime has also repeatedly claimed that Iran's ability to withstand the U.S. assault and ongoing blockade has been completely obliterated. That's also a lie. A leaked CIA analysis shows that Iran can easily outlast the United States' ongoing blockade. Iran also retains a significant stockpile of missile capabilities, ready to use if and when active fighting resumes.

The ugly...

Virginia redistricting overruled, Tennessee redistricting passes [Link]

On April 21, voters in Virginia approved a new congressional districting map that could have added as many as four representatives from the Democratic Party to the U.S. House of Representatives. This week, the Virginia Supreme Court ruled the redistricting plan violated the state's constitutional regulations on the timing of elections. The reasoning behind the ruling is highly suspect, as it essentially redefines an "election" to start when early voting becomes available, rather than the more commonly-understood election day. The decision of the Virginia Supreme Court to overturn the entire election is highly unusual, and will have broad impacts far beyond the current redistricting initiative.

Meanwhile, Tennessee has just approved a new congressional map to remove the only Democrat-held district in the state, centered around the majority-Black city of Memphis. This move was made despite the fact that Tennessee state law expressly prohibits mid-decade redistricting. Governor Bill Lee signed a bill to repeal that law, then extended the deadline for qualifying candidates for the upcoming primary elections, then approved the new district map.

These maps are racist tools of white supremacy at the behest of the most powerful white supremacist in the United States of America, Donald J. Trump.
